If the worship team at my church sounded like this band, we would be worshiping all day long. The deep, throaty voices singing in perfect harmony will leave you wanting to listen to ‘Where No One Stands Alone’ by Elvis Presley from The Band Steele.
Now if you don’t know anything about The Band Steele, you’ll be delighted to learn these two guys are best friends. According to the “About” section of the Band’s website, the pair grew up in high school together but they didn’t become really good friends until Ben Rubino had his socks blown off when he heard Bo Steele sing in a talent show.
Ben invited Bo to join his band and they’ve been best buds ever since. Not surprisingly, the band grew up in a one-light town in the deep country of Alabama where hunting, fishing, and praising God were their childhood staples. And this kind of upraising shines through in the songs they sing.
Ben and Bo lent their deep soulful sound to Elvis Presley’s song, “Where No One Stands Alone.” And it’s a pairing made in heaven. The song was originally released in 1967 on The King’s Gospel album, How Great Thou Art. This original song was written by Elvis at a time when he felt like he had everything the world could offer, all the riches he’s ever wanted but none of the riches could quench the loneliness in his heart.
“Once I stood in the night With my head bowed low
In the darkness as black as could be
And my heart felt alone and I cried, "Oh Lord
Don't hide your face from me"
Elvis may have felt like a modern-day King David who had riches and all the things life could offer but often found himself to be lonely and asking God to lend an ear to the prayers of his heart; which created this beautiful Christian Hymn that captured our hearts when it was first released.
Several decades later, The Band Steele dusted off the old hymn and breathed new life into it. Between Bo’s influence of old rock and Ben’s laid-back charm, the pair definitely make you want to listen to it over and over, and if you’re anything like me, it has quickly become a favorite!
“Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger; you have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me, O God my Savior.” Psalm 27:9
