A contestant on The Voice in Norway gave a stunning and epic powerhouse performance of a Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel classic song.

The practice of musicians covering songs made famous by other artists is a time-honored tradition and is here to stay. Programs like America’s Got Talent, American Idol, The Voice as well as YouTube ensure that covers will continue for some time.

One popular target of the cover treatment has been and continues to be Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence.” First released in 1964, “The Sound of Silence” is a beloved folk song about loneliness. The song has been covered several times, including by Disturbed, Pentatonix and American Idol’s Iam Tongi.

One of the latest covers of the song comes from a contestant on The Voice Norway. Kristoffer Sørensen gave “The Sound of Silence” a heavy metal sound as he sang the unforgettable lyrics.

Kristoffer’s performance starts off simple enough. He sits and sings on a darkened stage; the first verse is performed in a manner very reminiscent of the original. He draws the audience in, by performing “The Sound of Silence” exactly how most people know the song. But then Kristoffer surprises the audience in a big way.

After the first verse, Kristoffer completely switches gears. He uses his heavy metal-sounding voice to growl out the lyrics. The studio audience loves it. They immediately burst out into a round of applause.

From that point forward, it’s a powerhouse performance. Kristoffer captivates the audience and the judges by showing what his unique voice can do.

Not only does the audience love Kristoffer’s performance, but one of the judges also thoroughly appreciates what she’s hearing. She follows along, mouthing the lyrics to the song and even throws in a few gestures as well.

At the end of Kristoffer’s performance, the audience responds with a well-deserved and loud round of applause!
