One woman, a school bus driver, quickly stepped up and acted when she saw a young man, a third grader, choking, saving his life.
Heroes come from all walks of life. Unfortunately, those so often referred to as heroes aren’t the least bit heroic. Instead, Hollywood actors, greedy Washington politicians and athletes are more concerned about themselves than the well-being of others. But there are still actual heroes today, such as Mayrelyn Lopez.
Mayrelyn is a bus driver in Florida. She transports the children to and from school. She makes sure they get to their destination safely. But on one trip home after school, Mayrelyn found herself in a scary situation.
The clip posted on YouTube states that during the first stop on the way home from school, Mayrelyn got up from her driver’s to address a situation on the bus. It was resolved quickly, but on the way back to her seat Mayrelyn spotted something unusual and frightening.
One of the children, 8-year-old Levi Holder, had turned purple. He was choking on a piece of candy, unable to breathe. That’s when Mayrelyn, without thinking, sprang into action, according to Fox 35.
The school bus driver states that she grabbed the young man and began performing the Heimlich Maneuver. Moments later, Mayrelyn recalls that she successfully dislodged the candy, and young Levi was able to start breathing once again.
“It’s nothing to think in at the moment,” Mayrelyn said. “Just do it, what, what I have to do.”
Mayrelyn is the definition of a hero. She paid attention to her surroundings, stepped in, acted quickly and saved a life.
Praise God for Mayrelyn and people like her who do not get the attention they deserve. They aren’t seeking attention or trying to bring glory to themselves. Instead, they do what is right.
