A gym owner in Memphis, Tennessee, used a cup of coffee to change one man’s life after he found him sleeping in his car.
Life is a series of choices and decisions. Those actions yesterday will result in today's and tomorrow’s circumstances. However, while that may be true, everyone needs a little love and grace at times.
Roderick Duncan is a gym owner in Tennessee. He is a big proponent that change doesn't happen overnight. He also believes that our choices ultimately guide the direction of our lives. That’s why when he found 24-year-old Bryan Taylor, a homeless man living in one of his vehicles, he took a different approach, but not at first.
As the video posted on YouTube points out, Bryan showed up repeatedly, sleeping in Roderick’s car. Eventually, instead of kicking him out, the gym owner tried something else entirely. He got to know the young man over a cup of coffee.
The video mentions that Bryan had endured a difficult childhood and had a drinking issue. This time, Roderick showed Bryan love and helped him get his life back on track. He bought him some clothes, took him to job interviews and gave him a place to sleep on his couch.
However, over the course of their relationship, Bryan has messed up. He’s failed to live up to Roderick’s standards or violated some rules. But Roderick continues to show the man grace and love.
“Some people need more than one chance, you know?” Roderick said. “Some people, it takes, it takes a while for most kids to stop bumping their heads.”
Because of Roderick’s continued patience, love and grace, Bryan’s life has dramatically improved.
“I got a job,” Bryan said. “I got more confidence. I got a smile on my face.”
Because of a single cup of coffee and a lot of love and patience, Roderick is helping Bryan turn his life around.
