Fear, unfortunately, is a powerful emotion. It can keep people from reaching their full potential, from being all God has planned and intended for them. Thankfully, God and the faith and peace He provides are also powerful, able to overcome doubt and fear.
Mark chapter 4 mentions an instance in which the disciples were fearful, despite having Jesus alongside them in their boat. They were afraid of the storm and of drowning in the sea. Jesus was awakened by his disciples and calmed the wind and the waters by simply saying, “Peace, be still.” He then admonished them for their lack of faith.
In “Peace Be Still,” Hope Darst uses Jesus’ words from Mark 4 to sing about not being afraid when coming up against life’s many storms. Instead of having worry and anxiety like the disciples, Hope wishes to rely upon the Lord’s Word and direction.
In the song’s chorus, she mentions that all she needs is for the Lord to command and she will act.
“Say the word and I will
Set my feet upon the sea
Till I’m dancing in the deep”
Later in the song, Hope sings that she will not be afraid because what has come up against her is only waves. She adds that He is greater and more powerful than what is opposing her. Acting in such a way requires a fair amount of strength of faith, which Hope also asks for in the song.
“Peace Be Still” is a beautiful song about overcoming fear and doubt and having enough faith in Christ that no matter what we encounter in life, we will be victorious.
Be sure to give this delightful and truth-filled song a listen!
