Legendary country icon Dolly Parton brings the chills with this live performance of ‘Mary Did You Know?’
It took singer-songwriter Mark Lowery nearly 7 years to perfect the words to ‘Mary Did You Know?’ The idea for the song came to Mark when he was writing a Christmas program for Jerry Falwell in 1984. He began pondering what he would ask Mary if she was sitting right in front of him. He put together the questions that eventually became the lyrics.
In 1991, once the lyrics were complete, Mark asked his friend, and fellow musician, Buddy Greene to write the music to accompany his words. It only took 30 minutes for Buddy to compose the iconic music for ‘Mary, Did You Know?’
‘Mary did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
When you kiss your little baby, you kiss the face of God’
For decades, Dolly Parton has been a staple in the music industry. She made a name for herself as a positive personality that never holds back. She’s given us iconic hits such as ‘Jolene’ and ‘I Will Always Love You.’ Today, she’s reminding us of the real reason for the season with ‘Mary Did You Know?’
‘Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven’s perfect lamb?
That sleeping child you’re holding is the great I am’
What a beautiful performance from this country music icon.
Luke 1:30-31 “The angel said to her, “Mary, do not be afraid. You have found favor with God. See! You are to become a mother and have a Son. You are to give Him the name Jesus.”
