Debra Davis is no ordinary cafeteria worker. Debra, better known as Auntie Debra, at Hoover High School makes sure she delivers a smile and a sense of humor with every single meal. Her contagious personality is such a hit with the students. No one can forget that giant smile and her caring nature. But Debra doesn’t stop at just feeding the high school students.
After school is over with, Debra drives her ’76 Chevy Malibu all over San Diego. She’s looking for homeless people who are hungry for a home-cooked meal. And it’s always easy to find someone willing to take Debra’s amazing cooking. Some days, she’ll serve more than 50 multi-course meals, and she pays for it all from her own pocket.
Even though Debra doesn’t have the money to for this sort of operation, she’s determined to give back where there is a need. “But you don’t understand the joy that I get from feeding people,” she says. And Debra’s kindness hasn’t gone unnoticed by the community.
Recently, the school district invited Debra down to the school’s auto shop for a very special surprise. The auto body class had refurbished a 2014 Mazda 3 and they were giving it to Debra. Just watching the joy on her face when she realizes that the car is for her absolutely made my day.
Now, this amazing woman can continue her work of helping those in need. “I was looking for my reward in heaven and y’all gave me a little bit here on Earth,” she said.
